Oriel College (by zach.stone)
In memory of all the good times had at Oriel Hall and MCR with Jameson, Julia, the Kraken, and the rest of the crew. We had a good run.
In response to caislean-oir:
Of course I go in for May Day! In fact, my College, Magdalen, hosts the first of the May Morning festivities in Oxford every year. The choir sings from the top of the Great Tower at 6am, and thousands of people watch from the High Street as well as from the Cloisters Lawn inside College (where the people in the crowd in this video are— I was among them!). It’s worth watching this video just for the first song, the haunting Hymnus Eucharisticus. Despite the religious element to the celebrations, pagan overtones are everywhere, especially among the revelries that take place across the city after the choir have finished singing and all the bells are pealing. Lots of people still choose to adorn themselves with the customary sprigs of mayflower or other greenery. It’s a really magical, dream-like event, although there are of course quite a few people who are still more than a bit, uhh, woozy, from all the May Eve parties…
